Each VoD attempts to address a specific aspect or technology related to the general subject of BGP technologies deployed using the Cisco IOS. These VoDs are presented in a manner that applies the Cisco 360 Learning Program "options analysis" problem solving approach. This approach is often exhibited in the form of an "option analysis" decision tree diagrams. Several of these decision trees are exhibited in this outline with the description of each VoD block.

  • Introduction to BGP and BGP Neighbor Relationship Formation
    • Introduction to BGP (18 minutes)
    • An Introduction to Forming BGP Neighbor Relationships Part-1 (11 minutes)
    • An Introduction to Forming BGP Neighbor Relationships Part-2 (18 minutes)
    • Forming EBGP Neighbor Relationships Part-1 (23 minutes)
    • Forming EBGP Neighbor Relationships Part-2 (18 minutes)
    • Forming IBGP Neighbor Relationships - the Basics (28 minutes)
    • IBGP Peering with Route Reflectors Part-1 (15 minutes)
    • IBGP Peering with Route Reflectors Part-2 (17 minutes)
    • IBGP Peering with Confederations (25 minutes)

This set of VoDs begins with introducing the BGP protocol. It then covers a range of issues relating to forming BGP neighbor relationships. Separate VoDs are included on the subjects of forming EBGP and IBGP neighbor relationships.

  • BGP Fundamental Operations
    • Originating BGP Prefixes (17 minutes)
    • The Rule of Synchronization and Next-Hop Reachability Part-1 (16 minutes)
    • The Rule of Synchronization and Next-Hop Reachability Part-2 (10 minutes)

Once the material of Block One is viewed and an understanding of forming BGP neighbor relationships is attained, it is recommended to view Block #2. This Block covers the fundamental operations of originating BGP updates, addressing the Rule of Synchronization as well as addressing next-hop-reachability issues.

  • Filtering BGP Updates and Aggregation
    • Filtering BGP Updates by Prefix and Prefix-Mask Length (25 minutes)
    • Filtering BGP Routes Using AS path Access-Lists Part-1 (18 minutes)
    • Filtering BGP Routes Using AS path Access-Lists Part-2 (10 minutes)
    • Filtering BGP Updates Using the Community Attribute Part-1 (21 minutes)
    • Filtering BGP Updates Using the Community Attribute Part-2 (24 minutes)
    • Using Route Aggregation to Help Scale BGP Part-1 (21 minutes)
    • Using Route Aggregation to Help Scale BGP Part-2 (21 minutes)

Once BGP neighbor relationships are formed and routes are propogated, BGP routes oftentimes need to be filtered and aggregated. This Block examines a range of options related to filtering BGP routes. The Block ends with a presentation on BGP aggregation.

  • BGP Path Selection via Attribute Manipulation
    • An Introduction to BGP Path Selection and Policy-Routing Part-1 (18 minutes)
    • An Introduction to BGP Path Selection and Policy-Routing Part-2 (13 minutes)
    • Path Selection Features with BGP: Weight, Local-Preference, AS Path Prepending Part-1 (13 minutes)
    • Path Selection Features with BGP: Weight, Local-Preference, AS Path Prepending Part-2 (9 minutes)

This Block investigates one of the most powerful aspects of BGP — its multi-step path selection algorithm. First, a presentation is provided to allow learners to better understand how BGP selects the best path out of multiple possible paths. Then case studies are performed to better understand the BGP administrative weight value, the local-preference attribute and the AS Path Prepend command.

  • BGP Features
    • Securing BGP Peering Relationships (23 minutes)
    • Using BGP Route Dampening (20 minutes)

The VoDs in this final Block of this series investigates some of the specialized features of BGP such as applying MD5 authentication to BGP as well as BGP Route-Dampening.
